The input data for 3D modeling was traditionally provided by single point measurement (total station, GPS, etc.) or large-format aerial photogrammetry. Building high fidelity geometric models from these data sources require heavy workloads to produce acceptable products. Both the acquisition phase and modelling phase require substantial manpower and expert operators. The advent of LiDAR scanning technology has had a significant impact on both the data acquisition and the modelling times. This has been achieved via automated acquisition and modeling systems.
