Digital City
The desire to integrate all aspects of city management into a single platform has resulted in the concept of a Digital City. Originally using 2D GIS for its skeleton, digital cities are now moving towards complete and highly detailed 3D models requiring sophisticated 3D skeletons and data. As the foundation of digital city construction, the acquisition of 3D geographic information is especially important. Traditional acquisition methods have not kept pace with urban construction or the demand for high fidelity data. These problems are being solved with the use of mobile 3D laser scanners and high-resolution images which, through highly automated processing, provides rapid access to accurate, highly detailed and up-to-date urban geographic information. SureStar’s R-Angle mobile LiDAR is at the forefront of air and ground based LiDAR systems.

Project Background

With the continuous advancement of urbanization, urban development has gradually revealed many problems. At the end of 2012, China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development initiated the concept of a “harmonious, green and smart city”. Smart cities involve almost all urban component systems such as planning, municipal construction, transportation facilities, public services, dynamic monitoring, government decision-making, people's livelihood, and environmental protection. When combined, this poses new challenges to information acquisition and integration.


The key to information acquisition and integration is an accurate and detailed 3D skeleton, a product that mobile LiDAR readily produces. Mobile Lidar can quickly, accurately and efficiently obtain the necessary geometric city data to facilitate the development and implementation of various smart city initiatives.
